DANE

S ome days I think I'm a ladies' man, but today I think I'm just an ass. I set down my glasses on the nearest table and walk out of the ballroom like a man who's detonated an explosive device and doesn't want to see the carnage in his wake.

I can only imagine the look on Heather's face. She paled the longer I spoke. With light skin and hair the color of honey, she looked like she'd seen a ghost. Every fight or flight instinct in my body screamed at me to get the hell out of there before she erupted like a volcano.

"Dane Frazier!"

Oh, god. If I keep walking, I can pull out my phone, call an Uber, get in the car, and get home before Heather catches up with me.

But she keeps calling my name from behind. I hear her footsteps against the thick carpet and hear her dress swishing as she comes up hot.

Just keep walking. The app is taking too long to load. Don't fail me now, Uber. Heather is almost here.

I feel her hand on my shoulder just as Uber tells me there's a nice man named Nick 6 minutes away, but my battleship is sunk.

"Dane, stop." And I have no choice but to do as she says. "What was that back there?" Heather sounds almost like she's insulted by the words I used to describe my feelings or the way she's treated me.

To be fair, I could have been kinder. It wasn't all her fault. I let her use me for sex. In the beginning, it was a mutual agreement. I used her, she used me, we both got enjoyment out of it. I'm not sure when I started falling in love with the way she winked at me across the dinner table in recognition of our dirty little secret. I don't know when I started thinking of her every time I opened a fortune cookie, but I sent her pictures of all my fortunes because every time we spent the night together we got Chinese and read our cookies together.

I wish I could say that it was four years and three days ago, or January 12th. I wish I could tell her the exact date so that she could look back and see when things changed. But for me, there are just memories. There are days when we fell into bed together and had sex until we were sweaty and sore and could barely breathe without touching one another. And then there

are days when I thought I wouldn't breathe again until I heard from her.

Those days keep coming faster and more frequently.

Heather waves her hand in front of my face. "Dane? Hello? Talk to me."

There's a pleading in her voice that nearly breaks me. "Can we go back to my room and talk, please? I need to know what's going on."

I'm afraid if we go back to her room that we'll fall into our old habits.

One of us will get naked or our lips will slip onto the other and the next thing I'll know, we'll be in bed.
